What is an external antenna, and why would I need one?

An external antenna is a device used to improve the signal reception of your internet-capable devices, such as routers, gateways, or mobile hotspots. These antennas can help enhance connectivity, especially in areas with weak signals, by boosting the quality and strength of the signal received by your device. Generally, an internet capable device comes with built-in internal antennas or has external antenna ports and comes OEM with no included antennas or very basic antennas. Mobile Hotspots generally have internal antennas along with external antenna ports. Routers and Gateways generally have external antenna ports and come with basic paddle-style antennas.

How do I know which type of antenna I need?

The type of antenna you need depends on your specific application. If you require better cellular reception, a cellular antenna would be ideal. For improving WiFi signals, a WiFi antenna would be suitable. If you need GPS tracking capabilities, a GPS antenna is recommended. AntennaGear also offers combination antennas that cater to various solutions. A mobile hotspot will generally use one or more cellular antennas, while routers and gateways can be any number and combination of cellular, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The type of antenna can also vary on whether or not it is used in a fixed location or in a mobile application.

Can I use an external antenna with my current device?

Most devices that rely on wireless signals have ports that allow for the connection of an external antenna. You should check your device's specifications or manual to ensure compatibility. If unsure, you can contact our support team with details about your device. Connecting an external antenna will also depend on the type of connection ports on your device. AntennaGear ALL standard RF connector ends in stock and can customize any antenna to fit your application.

How do I install an external antenna?

Installation generally involves connecting the antenna to the appropriate port on your device and positioning the antenna for optimal signal reception. We provide a device port guide for every device that we sell antennas for. The port guides show where the external antennas connect to each of the devices. These port guides are located on specific device's main page at the top. The external antenna ports of most devices are delicate, so take caution when plugging them in or tightening them down. If you need additional help, our support team is available to guide you through the process.

Where should I place my external antenna for the best performance?

The optimal placement of an external antenna depends on the signal source and environment. Generally, antennas should be placed as high as possible and away from obstructions such as walls or large metal objects. Outdoor antennas should be positioned to face the nearest cell tower or WiFi source.

Will using an external antenna improve my internet speed?

- A cellular external antenna can improve signal strength and signal quality resulting in faster and more consistent speeds, especially in areas with poor coverage. A WiFi external antenna can improve range, signal strength, and signal quality. While an external antenna can't increase your internet service's maximum speed, it can improve signal strength and quality, leading to a more stable and reliable connection. The absolute maximum speed it determined by the carrier, your data plan, and bandwidth.

Can I use multiple antennas at once?

Yes, in many cases, you can use multiple antennas simultaneously to further enhance signal reception. This is especially useful for devices with multiple input/output (MIMO) technology, where multiple antennas can be used to maximize signal quality and speed.

Is it more effective to use two antennas simultaneously (MIMO) instead of just one?

For devices that support Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, using two or more antennas can significantly improve signal strength, data throughput, and overall connection stability. MIMO technology allows multiple antennas to send and receive data simultaneously, which can enhance performance, especially in environments with weak or fluctuating signals.

Do external antennas work indoors?

Yes, external antennas can be used indoors, but their effectiveness might be reduced compared to outdoor installation due to potential obstructions and interference. For the best results, position the antenna near a window or in an area with the least amount of interference.

What is the difference between an omnidirectional and a directional antenna?

An omnidirectional antenna can receive signals from all directions, making it ideal for general use when the signal source's direction is unknown or when there are multiple sources. A directional antenna focuses on a specific direction, providing better performance when the signal source is known and located in a particular direction.
